Anatomy and Function of the Colon
The
colon is a tubular organ approximately five feet long and 2-1/2 inches in
diameter. It adjoins the small intestine at the cecum, extends up and across the
abdominal cavity, and down the left ventral side, where it meets the sigmoid and
rectum. Its four main functions are the final digestion of food, the absorption
of water and nutrients, the discharge of toxins and cellular waste, and the
elimination of digestive residue.
How the Colon Affects Overall Health
When
the colon is congested with stagnant waste, poisons back up into the system and
pollute the inner environment. This is called autointoxication, literally
"self-poisoning." It affects all the body's tissues, can be a causative factor
in numerous dysfunctions, and is considered by many to be the underlying cause
of disease. The chart below outlines the major organs affected by
autointoxication and a handful of resulting impacts on overall health:
|
Poisons backed up into the: |
Can cause: |
|
Nervous system |
Headaches, irritability, depression |
|
Stomach |
Bloating, indigestion |
|
Lungs |
Shortness of breath, foul breath |
Many
factors contribute to autointoxication. Stress, insufficient exercise,
overeating, and ignoring "nature's call" all augment bowel problems. Improper
diet is another causative factor. For example, excessive consumption of
mucus-producing foods such as meat, dairy products, and glutenous flour can
cause dense, sticky bowel movements. Such stools are difficult for the body to
eliminate. When they are expelled, they leave behind a glue-like coating on the
wall of the colon that accumulates layer by layer into a hard, rubbery crust.
The body cannot eliminate these layers on its own, so they are often carried for
the duration of a person's life as toxic burden.
Constipation is one of the first indications that the bowel is not functioning
properly. When a person is constipated, the walls of the colon are often
encrusted with layers of mucus and accumulated fecal matter. The inner diameter
of the colon is reduced like a water pipe blocked by mineral deposits, and
eventually the opening becomes narrower, making it more difficult for waste to
pass through. Muscular contractions known as peristalsis can no longer sweep the
hardened feces along the digestive canal, and small, infrequent, and ineffectual
bowel movements result.
When
the colon contains digested food and other wastes longer than a day, the
contents ferment and putrefy. When this fermented waste combines with the body's
bile acids from the liver, carcinogens can form. We know that the presence of
carcinogens can lead to cancer, thus enhanding the colon's ability to
efficiently eliminate waste can reduce the risk of developing serious illness.
What is Colon Irrigation?
A
colon irrigation using the Wood Gravitational Method is an internal bath that
helps cleanse the colon of poisons, gas and impacted mucus and fecal matter.
Unlike an enema, it does not involve the retention of water. There's no
discomfort, no internal pressure, just a steady flow of water in and out of the
colon.
How is a Colonic Administered?
A
person receiving a colonic lies on a table eighteen inches below the
temperature-controlled input tank. A disposable speculum is gently inserted into
the rectum. A light current of water, under the careful control of the
practitioner, flows into the colon via a small water tube and out through the
evacuation tube, carrying with it loosened feces and mucus. As the water flows
out of the colon, the practitioner gently massages the abdomen to help the colon
release its contents. The therapist can see the expelled waste through a special
viewing window in the evacuation tube. The person is well covered and their
comfort is given top priority during the procedure. The process takes about an
hour.
How Many Colonics Do I Need?
The
number of sessions varies according to the individual and his or her state of
health. Some people report rapid improvement; others may not. After your
first colonic appointment, the therapist will determine whether further
treatment is needed, and will give you homework to do to help you improve your
health. Frequently waste is so hard and lodged in the colon that it may take a
few sessions to sufficiently soften and release all accumulated material.
Follow-up
Once
the colon is clean, it's advisable to have a colonic every month or two to
maintain improved function. Particularly beneficial times are at the change of
season when diet and exercise patterns often change, during the cold and flu
season, and before, during, and after fasting to prevent the reabsorption and to
hasten the removal of toxic waste.
What Are the Benefits of Colon Irrigation?
Colonics offer relief from a variety of ailments. Constipation, diarrhea, gas,
bloating, indigestion, Candida, headaches, fatigue, low immunity, allergies,
irritability, skin conditions, menstrual disorders, lethargy, cold hands and
feet, and even pain are among the maladies people find relieved by colon
cleansing. One's sense of well-being is often dramatically improved following
colon irrigation. One feels lighter and more energetic, the body can assimilate
food and supplements more efficiently, and better defend itself against
dysfunction. Natural peristalsis, tone, and regularity are restored and many
serious ailments can be averted through this gentle, sterile, safe and effective
technique.
Are There Side Effects?
There
are none. It is not uncommon, however, for some people to have headaches or
fleeting cold symptoms following a colonic. Dormant toxins are awakened and
flushed out through colon therapy and the body can develop symptoms if
withdrawal as it readjusts to its natural balance free of obstruction. Such
healing crises pass quickly and afftected individuals feel marked improvement
with further sessions.
How Does Colon Irrigation Affect Intestinal Flora?
One
of the functions of the first half of the colon is to gather intestinal flora
needed for action in the rest of the colon. When the accumulation of feces leads
to encrustation, it becomes difficult for the colon to function normally and the
necessary flora are thwarted. Cleansing the colon helps bring the acid-alkaline
ratio back into balance. In this homeostatic environment, develop.

Massage Therapy and The Kapsos System of Deep Muscle Therapy
Massage Therapy
Therapeutic massage improves health by enhancing the body's own healing
capacity. It involves the manipulation of soft tissue structures via movement
and pressure to prevent and alleviate pain, soreness, muscle spasm, stress, and
various other ailments. It's most notably beneficial in conditions where
conventional medicine fails--in chronic arthritis, muscoloskeletal disorders,
and Parkinson's disease, among other conditions. Research shows that it reduces
the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph
flow, relaxes muscles, expands range of motion, improves the rate of recovery
from injury and illness, and increases endorphins, the body's natural
painkillers.
The Kapsos System of Deep Muscle Therapy
The
Kapsos system of deep muscle therapy surpasses results obtained by ordinary
massage. Developed by Marge Kapsos, a massage therapist, deep muscle therapist,
a physiotherapist who lectured and taught throughout the US, the Kapsos system
brings more potent relief to pain and affliction.
While
working at the European Health Spa, Marge perfected and added to the basic
techniques of massage therapy. In working on often more than ten clients a day
with a variety of physical ailments, she continued to perfect her system and
teach more than 5,000 students worldwide how to provide relief to physical
conditions including muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy,
scoliosis, herniated disks, neck problems, tennis elbow, bursitis, carpal tunnel
syndrome, migraine headaches, strokes, epilepsy, and a variety of other
conditions. Her technique does not cure these maladies; it simply provides
enough relief to help the body help itself. This enormous contribution to muscle
therapy led to Marge being named one of the "Ten Best Therapists in the World"
by the World Summit Conference held in Hot Springs, VA.
Marge's system is not to be confused with deep tissue massage, Swedish massage
or Rolfing. With the system, the therapist works across the muscle tissue and
every ligament and tendon possible in order to release the tension that
originates in the muscles and provide the body with the nourishment to heal
itself. The key is in the release of trauma at its source--connective tissue.
This therapy greatly assists the structure of the body as well as the processes
of detoxification and restoration. Following the therapy, the receiver must
drink enough water to hydrate the muscles and flush released toxins from the
body.
Julie
is the only therapist in the state of Wisconsin who Marge has authorized to
teach the Kapsos method. She takes great pride in carrying on Marge's work, and
employs it to help people regain mobility and restore their bodies to their
greatest potential. She has furthered Marge's technique by stressing the
importance of detoxification and incorporating trigger point release technique,
enzyme muscle contraction assessment, Krause Weber testing, urinalysis
evaluation, and much more into her protocol. Many of her clients finish their
seven-day tissue cleanses with muscle therapy to eliminate the last remaining
toxins.

Iridology and Sclerology
Iridology is the study of the iris, the colored part of the eye. The body's most
intricate tissue structure, the iris is composed of myriad nerve endings which
respond to organ and tissues conditions, reflecting a trememdous amount of
information about an individual's health. Its overall appearance, pigment
details, and specific fiber arrangement reveal areas of injury, irritation,
congestion, toxic accumulation, and more. The iris also reflects constitutional
weaknesses, signaling an individual's potential for future health risks. The
trained practitioner identifies these conditions and risks and develops a
protocol to address them.
Sclerology is the study of the markings and colorings in the whites of the eyes.
Like the iris, the sclera reveals pathological conditions and enables the
practitioner to identify what's needed for an individual's improved health and
long-term wellness.
Trained in both disciplines, Julie teaches their techniques in and out of the US
and uses them at the clinic to determine the most effective natural steps to
address health as quickly as possible.
"I
believe in iridology as the 'eye' of the natural healing arts, the window
through which a holistic perspective on health becomes understandable." -Dr.
Bernard Jensen
Enzymes and Enzyme Evaluation
Enzyme Evaluation
There
are three types of enzymes; metabolic, digestive, and food enzymes. The body
makes metabolic enzymes and uses them to catalyze cellular reactions. Digestive
enzymes are produced chiefly by the pancreas and are used in the digestion,
utilization, and elimination of food. Food enzymes occur only in raw foods, as
they can't withstand cooking or pasteurization. Enzymes are vital to good
health; without them, the body can't assimilate food, vitamins, minerals, or
other nutrients, and it can't carry out ordinary cellular functions. Current
cancer research reflects depleted enzyme levels in cancer sufferers, indicating
that low levels of enzymes result in pain and dysfunction.
Enzyme Evaluation
At
LCHC, we use the Loomis system of enzyme evaluation to provide biochemical
insight into what foods are difficult for your body to digest. Results enable
Julie to determine your enzymatic deficiencies, what dietary adjustments are
necessary and what type of enzymatic suplementation is vital to addressing your
health and building your body back to optimum function.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from a variety of plants
including herbs, flowers, and trees. They constitute some of the most
concentrated natural extracts known, exhibiting significant antiviral,
anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, hormonal, and psychological
benefits. They penetrate skin and cell membranes and transport oxygen and
nutrients to organs and muscle tissue, thereby generating healing. While their
benefits have been known since ancient times, their use faded in the US with the
expansion of allopathic medicine. Over the last thirty years, however,
healthcare professionals have rediscovered their therapeutic value. Because they
are effective, gentle, and safe when properly employed, they have exploded in
popularity.
Testing
We at
LCHC strive to help our clients restore their body balance so they can enjoy
optimum health and activity. We begin by employing a variety of techniques that
identify stressors and determine the hidden causes of dysfunction. Armed with
this information, we then work with clients to design individual protocols to
address health as safely, quickly and effectively as possible.
24-Hour Urinalysis
When
the kidneys filter the blood, they eliminate waste through urine. Urine is thus
a clone of the blood, revealing, through testing, information about an
individual's food and drink intake, toxic substance load, and more. Urinalysis
involves standard screening for diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease and
urinary infection. Urine color, cloudiness, volume, and specific gravity are
analyzed to assess the kidneys' ability to cleanse the blood. An indican
evaluation measures the presence of uneliminiated food in the colon. Urinary
sediment is assessed for crystal formations, which can point to specific
digestive disturbances. Excreted acidity and alkalinity are compared to the
amounts of excreted calcium and salt. Vitamin C excretion is measured as well.
Because the body stores substances it's deficient in and discards substances it
has in excess, the tests provide valuable insight into the body's function.
Carbohydrate Intolerance
Symptoms including dry skin, dry mouth, muscle weakness, mental fogginess,
irritability, insomnia, sensitivity to light, vocal problems, indigestion and
constipation are associated with carbohydrate intolerance. Nutrition evaluation,
palpitation technique, and lab testing assist us in determining an individual's
sensitivity to carbohydrates. Armed with vital results, we then work with
clients to draw appropriate dietary guidelines to address digestion,
assimilation, and overall health.
Homeostatic Digestive Challenge Test
When
a digestive organ is stressed, surrounding muscles contract, causing pain and
further inhibiting proper action of the affected organ. The Homeostatic
Digestive Challenge Test is a physical examination for increased muscle tension
in areas supporting the digestive organs. Findings from an exam during a fast
are compared with the findings of an exam 45 minutes following a meal. Results
allow us to determine what physiological changes take place when your digestive
system is presented with different foods, and how your organs respond to fats,
sugars, proteins, carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables. In some cases, exam
results are weighed with information obtained from a 24-hour urinalysis.
Additional Services
Allergies and Asthma
Each
year, more than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, immune system
reactions to substances including grass, pollen, dust, and pet dander. Allergies
occur when the immune system releases histamine, which causes inflammation of
the eyes, nose, throat, ears and skin. Headache, sore throat, eczema, and
digestive problems are among additional symptoms of allergic reaction.
Related to allergies, asthma is a disorder characterized by shortness of breath,
wheezing, cough and the excessive production of mucus. During an asthma attack,
air tubes tighten, producing difficult or labored breathing. Many attacks are
triggered by allergic reactions to dust mites, grass, pollen, pet dander and
food additives such as dyes, flavorings, and preservatives.
Beginning with a consult and evaluation, we offer specific protocols to address
individual needs in cases of allergy and asthma. Contact us to schedule an
appointment or to learn more.
Insomnia
Insomnia is the inability to get healthful, restful sleep. Statistics report
that a fifth of American adults and half of American older adults have
difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. Causative factors include age,
lifestyle, emotional condition, dietary insufficiency, environmental factors,
and physical imbalances such as the accumulation of toxins, which lead to
neurotransmitter and hormone imbalance.
Our
individual protocols are aimed at precluding all potential causes of insomnia,
rather than providing mere symptomatic relief. Holistic therapy is multifaceted,
incorporating approaches such as diet and lifestyle change, behavioral therapy,
massage therapy, pain management, and therapeutic-grade essential oils, as well
as the use of enzymes, herbs, and other food-source supplements. In addition, we
offer detoxification programs as well as tea and enzyme combinations that
effectively combat insomnia in often less than a week.
Infertility
Infertility is the inability to become pregnant or carry a pregnancy to
full-term. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 1 in 6
couples has a problem with infertility. It's reported that women have the
problem in 40% of cases, men in another 40%, and both partners in 20% of cases.
Female infertility is caused by numerous factors such as dietary insufficiency,
hormone imbalance, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, reproductive
organ damage, and toxic chemical overload. It causes not only emotional
devastation but financial turmoil as well. Some methods for assisted conception
cost over $10,000 and offer success rates of only 20%.
It
makes sense to explore less expensive and more successful natural options. At
LCHC, we incorporate dietary adjustment, nutritional supplementation, and
therapy into our protocols. Safe and helathful, our program has a 95-98% success
rate. Contact us to schedule a consult or to learn more.
Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease
Multiple sclerosis is a condition of progressive nerve disturbances. Symptoms
include blurred vision, dizziness, weakness, and tingling sensations.
Parkinson's disease is brain disease caused by nerve damage to the brain.
Symptoms include tremor and involuntary movement. Sufferers of these
degenerative conditions often have severe constipation caused by the destructive
effects of processed foods, starches, and grains. Detoxification and improved
bowel function are paramount to addressing dysfunction.
At LCHC, we evaluate individual sources of stress and develop specific protocols to address health. With nutritional supplementation, dietary changes and regular therapies including muscle therapy and colon irrigation, our clients have achieved significant improvement. Contact us for more information or to schedule a consultation.
